College Money Talk: Doing Your Own Groceries

Now that you’re in college, you’ll be in charge of doing your own grocery trips since mom won’t be there to do it for you. College students do their groceries because they have to provide for their basic necessities. But groceries do more than that. They help you save on your daily budget. The only trick you have to learn is how to spend your money wisely. You can start doing this by creating a shortlist of the items which you need to buy.

Here are some items that must be included in your grocery list:

Toiletries. Consider your main bathroom needs: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, facial wash/moisturizer, and lotion. These are things you can buy only once a month since you’ll be using them for a long period of time.

Canned/microwavable food. You can cook these foods in your dorm room, and they save you from spending bucks on fast food meals. These foods also come in handy when you’re in an emergency cramming situation. Eating keeps you up all night.

Paper towels. They are always handy, from wiping tears to cleaning up the mess. Get a pack good enough for a month’s use.

Cleaning materials. If you have items that need to be washed, such as plates or microwavable containers, then you need to have your own cleaning stuff, i.e. soap and a sponge. They keep your food holders clean at all times.

Vitamins. Remember, you need to stay healthy despite all the stress you’ll be facing in the days to come. It’s best to take a regular dose of multivitamins to keep you energized (consult your doctor first before doing so).

These are items which can keep you a good week’s (or even a month’s, depending on how you consume them) supply of your basic needs. Doing a regular grocery keeps you from impulsive buying since you’re ensured of your necessities. Thus, you not only get your needs on time, you actually save money as well.

Is your allowance not enough to pay for your groceries? A scholarship may actually help you out with that.

Here's another person I'd like you guys to meet. His name is Barack, but back then people call him Barry. During this time he was a high school basketball star ready to enter college with an Afro hairdo.

It always pays to be a school celebrity. Be one.

Meet Hillary. In this picture she was a free-spirited college senior wearing a pair of aviators that matched her gleeful smile. Beside her is Bill, who was back then her boyfriend.

OPERATION: EARTH DAY!

We are celebrating Earth Day in a few days' time, and since we are living in a place we call Earth, we all share the responsibility in keeping it clean, green and safe. Oops. Yeah, you just heard the word RESPONSIBILITY. Sounds pretty heavy, huh? But in this case, responsibility is made up of easy simple steps which you can even enjoy doing. Think of these steps not as chores but more of safety precautions or even fun-filled activities. This way you not only get to save Mother Earth but as well live a healthy lifestyle and a good bonding time with your friends.

Here are a few simple tips you can do today (and yeah, eventually, everday! haha):

1. Get a house plant. Why not try taking care of plants in your house? There are a lot of small, low-maintanance plants available in garden shops which you can place by your bedroom window. These plants not only help promote a greener environment-they actually keep your place cool and well-ventilated.

2. Switch off all appliances and lights when not in use. Most fire incidents come from short-circuits and overused appliances. So, if you don't want to cause a fire in your dorm, practice switiching off all your unused appliances when you're not using them. Unplug these appliances too whenever you leave the house.

3. Recycle! For sure you have tons of non-biodegradable garbage ranging from papers to plastics, bottles and cans. Try to do weekly task of segregating these stuff and see which ones you can reuse, send to the garbage can, as well as those which you can earn money from! There are junk shops that buy paper, plastics and glass bottles which can pay for your weekend lunch.

4. Join an org. Try to be active in Earth Day events or discussion groups. You not only learn new and exciting ideas on how to save the environment, you also get to know new people. You need not actually join events in person-there are a lot of e-groups which you can subscribe via the Internet.

These are only a few steps which you can do in a jiffy. You can also tag your friends along so you can create a bonding activity. So c'mon people, let's celebrate Earth Day!

College life is actually more exciting than you think.

Dorm Dilemma #1: Should You be Roommates with Someone from High School?

Some of your high school friends will be entering the same college you'll be going to. That would mean less homesick tantrums since you'll still get to hang out with the same faces. But to live together under one roof is a different thing. So, if you're having second thoughts on whether to share a room with your high school friends, then this video might just be able to help you decide.

Money Making Schemes You Can Do in College

College life introduces you to a world of freedom, independence, and most of all, self-service. These may all seem to be in your favor because, finally, you’ll be living miles apart from your nagging mom (who, in fairness, never failed to prepare your lunch back in high school). But along great power comes great responsibility, says Lord Byron. So while you’re having the time of your life partying on a weekend, you’ll be facing one major pain most of your peers will suffer throughout their college years: insufficient funds.

So, in order to help yourself cope with your everyday expenses (expect your allowance to be either late or not enough), here are some money-making schemes you may consider doing:

1. Be a “lab rat” – It does pay to be a human guinea pig. A lot of college students nowadays earn bucks just by undergoing experiments or by answering surveys. Your university’s psychology department might be in need of subjects who can perform certain tests for their ongoing behavioral research. You may earn as much as $50 (or more, rates may vary) on each experiment.

2. Offer services - What skills have you got? You may tutor students with their math subjects, or write reaction papers. Think of your talents that you can earn from. These may even lead you to bigger business opportunities.

Find out the different scholarships that can help you with your college needs.

3. Do online jobs – Internet-based jobs are becoming a trend nowadays. Most online jobs are in need of writers, telemarketers, online English teachers, among others. These jobs pay as much as your daily wage of working part-time in Starbucks.

These money-making ideas may provide for your daily needs, but remember to spend your earnings wisely. College life is full of surprises and emergencies, so it’s always best to have some cash for the rainy days.
